The Need to Seek the Lord: Gospel Today Devotional - 27th September

The word of God admonishes that people get to seek the Lord. It is in seeking the Lord that he is found; believers and unbelievers alike. Those who are yet to be saved need to seek him because when they do, they find him and get rest for their souls. Believers as well are enjoined to seek the Lord with the assurance that when they do, they will find him; they are to seek him more as their walk with him deepens.

God's promise are ever true. They are in him yea, and in him amen. He says to ask, and it shall be given; to knock, and it shall be opened; to seek and find. Meaning, that which comes as result of seeking is that we find that which we seek, and in this case, the Lord. Why are we assured of this? The scripture says that God rewards those who seek him diligently (Hebrews 11:6).

But then, we need ask ourselves some very important questions, why do we have to seek God? Why should we seek him? Do we really have to? These are questions that we all demand answers to, don't we? I believe we all do. There's the need to seek the Lord, and amongst the many reasons we have to is one stated in the passage of scripture below. Shall we take a look?

"Man's goings are of the Lord ; how can a man then understand his own way?" (Proverbs 20:24).

You know, when a child decides to go somewhere on his own, say a nearby store. He would need to seek direction from his father, won't he? This is because he really does not know the way to the store but has a desire to go there perhaps to get something for himself. He has to seek direction therefore from the one who knows the way, and whose direction he can trust to get to the store, right?

The truth has ever been, and will remain that man was created by God. And there's no way we can live outside of him. Until we begin to see this, it's possible we think we can do things on our own without the help of the Lord. Look at what the scripture says again, that man's going (the creation of God) are of the Lord ( he alone understands how it is we should live, what we should do, what steps to take per time, what decisions are good for us, what job to take, what place to stay, etc). He created us, and he alone knows these things, even man himself does not understand his own way, how then does he think he can help himself?

If you do not know where to go, how do you get there? If you do not know what decisions to make, how do you make them? The truth remains that when we live outside him, we cannot do anything. If we do not know what to do, and understand even our ways, but know one who does, don't you think it is justified to seek him? The interesting thing is that he doesn't hide these things but expects that we seek him to know his mind for us. Will you from this day decide to seek the Lord to know his mind for you? Or will you prefer to live outside him, and not bother to know what he has for you? There's the need to seek the Lord. May the Lord open our eyes to it, and help us seek him indeed. Amen.

Thought for the day:

You cannot do anything by yourself. You need the help of God. If even you does not know the way to go, how then do you intend to get there?
