Knowing God as Refuge: Gospel Today Devotional - 24th December, 2023

Many times when a community is invaded, a city or a country as the case may be or maybe not invaded but due to some natural occurrences such as earthquakes, land slides, etc, the displaced persons having no where to stay may find shelter in another community, city or country. This is why such persons are referred to as refugees. At such moments, the community, city or country where they have decided to stay becomes a refuge camp for them. This implies that such a city or community has been able to give them shelter over their head. They have been able to create a system of protection for this displaced persons. Hallelujah.

Knowing God as Refuge: Gospel Today Devotional - 24th December, 2023

One thing about those who serve as refuge to this persons is the fact that they are immune to the things that have displaced such persons. They not only seek to provide shelter for them but that the reason they can and are able to do that is that what is prevalent in this displaced communities is not prevalent in theirs such that those persons can find peace, and rest taking their shelter. They would be no point staying there if what they are running from is what they are also coming to meet. Praise God. While they are there, those who are injured are being attended to, those who need to be fed are being taken care of, utilities are being provided for the refugees to put them in a state of rest.

The explanation above is to shed more light on the lesson for today, still on knowing God. It is to create for us a picture of what it means to take refuge in God or to see God as refuge. This is our focus today. That God is our refuge and until we know him as our refuge, we would not relate with him as such. Praise God. The passages to be considered are seen below,

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1)."Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us" (Psalm 62:8)."The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe" (Proverbs 18:10).

There's this thing I want you to know about God. The fact that God is a covering for the righteous. For the one begotten of God, God is a shield to him. God is a refuge to him. He will not leave him to be harmed neither will he watch him to be duly oppressed. God is a shelter to those who are his. I believe you must have seen an hen, have you noticed how she protects her chicks from the hawk? She doesn't want to even hear the sound of the hawk. At the sound of the hawk, she spreads her wings round her chicks, and they find protection under her wings. This is the same way God shields the righteous from the enemy. The difference however is that as protective as the hen may be, the hawk sometimes succeeds in stealing at least one of her chicks but not God.

You cannot take from him that which is under his watch. This is who God is to you. God is your refuge. Take a look at the scriptures above, the first says that God is our refuge (very simple) a very present help in time of trouble. The second says to trust in him and pour our hearts before him, why? Because he is our refuge. The third says that the name of the Lord is a refuge for us, and that we can run into it and find protection (paraphrased). It is important you know God as your refuge. Others may take their refuge in men, many may hide under the rock, and build shelters for themselves underneath the ground, but you have to know this day that God alone is your refuge.

There shall no evil befall those under the watch of God. Seek your refuge in God alone. Know him as your refuge and relate with him as such. His name alone is a strong tower, call on his name. Take refuge in God; in his name, in his word, in fellowship with him. Trust always in him. When you are weary, troubled, faint in heart, seek to take refuge in him knowing that he is your refuge. The Lord help us all. Amen.

Thought for the day: The Lord is a covering for you. He is your shield, he is your shelter. He is your refuge, no one else. Trust in him, and seek to take refuge in him at all times.
