The scripture talks about Hannah's prayer and how she made a promise to God in the book of 1 Samuel chapter 1. Although she was loved by her husband, Hannah was without a child and this became a very serious issue for her.
As a result, she went to seek the face of God. It was in her prayer to God for a child that she also made a promise to him. What was Hannah's promise to God? That if God would give her a male child, she would give him back to him to serve him all the days of his life. Did God answer her prayer? Was she able to keep her promise? Let's see the passage of scripture below to answer some of these questions.
"But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there abide for ever. [24] And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the Lord in Shiloh: and the child was young. [26] And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the Lord. [27] For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him: [28] Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord ; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there." (1 Samuel 1:22,24,26-28)
God is faithful. This is one thing we must keep in mind as believers. God proved his faithfulness by giving Hannah a male child as she requested. He remembered her and gave ears to her prayer. God heard her cry and came to her rescue. This confirms the word of God that says we should call on him and that he would answer us ( Jeremiah 33:3).
Did Hannah fulfill her promise? Yes, she did. This showed that she didn't make the vow or promise to God just to get a child as some people do to get things from some other people for example. Hannah knew what she was saying and knew by the grace of God that she would be able to keep her promise to God.
If she had kept the child, it would have been understandable since that was her first and who knew if she was going to ever give birth to another after that. Still, she gave out the child to the Lord as she had promised and God blessed her with more children.
Do you remember to keep your promise to God just like Hannah? It is true God is faithful but are you faithful? Didn't you promise the Lord to do certain things if he did that which you asked? Did you remember to do as you promised? The Lord causes this to sink deeply into our hearts. Amen.
Daily Nugget: Do not just seek to make vows before the Lord but be ready also to do as you have vowed.
Prayer: Lord, help me not just to make promises before you but to be able also to keep my promises; for all the vows I was unable to fulfill, forgive me, and give me the grace to keep them.
