The Power of God: Gospel Today Devotional - 1st July

Memory Verse: “The Lord killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.” - 1 Samuel 2:6 (KJV)

There are certain things every believer needs to know about God, and one of the most foundational is this: God is all-powerful. There is nothing He cannot do. No situation is too difficult for Him, no circumstance beyond His reach, and no problem too great for His hand. When this truth takes root in our hearts, it produces something remarkable — instead of fear and anxiety, we find rest and confidence in Him.

Consider this: if your earthly father were a man of great influence and power (someone who could act decisively in any situation), would you not feel secure knowing he was on your side? Now lift your eyes higher. God is infinitely more powerful than any earthly father. The Scripture paints a breathtaking picture of what that power looks like:

*"The Lord killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them. He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed."*

Look at what God's power has already accomplished in history. Did He not destroy Pharaoh and his entire army in the Red Sea? Did He not part those same waters so that the children of Israel crossed over on dry ground? (Exodus 14). His power is not theoretical — it is demonstrated.

The Lord can make poor and make rich. He stripped the Syrians of their possessions and brought abundance to a besieged Israel overnight (2 Kings 7). He raises the poor out of the dust and lifts the beggar from the rubbish heap, seating them among princes. Did He not exalt Mordecai and bring down proud Haman in a single day? (Esther 6–7).

And His power does not stop at provision and reversal of fortune. God keeps the feet of His saints. He silences the wicked. His adversaries are broken to pieces. No one can stand against Him and prevail, for the Scripture declares: “by strength shall no man prevail” (1 Samuel 2:9). Human strength has limits; God's does not.

So if this all-powerful God is for you, what have you to fear? As Paul would later echo this same truth: *"If God be for us, who can be against us?"* (Romans 8:31). The answer is no one.

Rest in that today. God is on your side, and His power has never failed.

Daily Reflection

The power of God is not a theological abstraction. It is a present, active reality for every believer. Hannah, who prayed this prayer in 1 Samuel 2, had known the depths of personal helplessness. She was barren, mocked, and grieved. Yet she prayed to a God she knew was powerful enough to turn her situation around completely — and He did. Her song of praise, from which our passage is drawn, is the overflow of someone who has personally encountered the God who lifts the lowly.

Take a moment today to recall a situation in your life that felt — or still feels — impossible. Bring it before God not in desperation, but in faith. You are praying to the same God who parted the Red Sea, fed a nation in the wilderness, shut the mouths of lions, and raised the dead. His power has not diminished. His arm is not shortened. Whatever you are facing, it is not beyond Him.

*"Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?"* (Jeremiah 32:27)

Prayer Session

Heavenly Father, I come before You today in awe of who You are. You are the Lord who kills and makes alive, who brings low and lifts up, who raises the poor from the dust and seats them among princes. You are the God of all power, and there is none like You.

Forgive me for the times I have forgotten this — for the moments I have worried as though You were absent, or feared as though You were powerless. Today I choose to rest in the truth that You are able, and that You are for me.

I bring before You every situation that has seemed impossible in my life. Every burden I have carried in my own strength. Every fear I have nursed in silence. Lord, I release them all to You now. You are the God who can do what no man can do, and I trust You completely.

Keep my feet, Lord, as Your Word promises. Silence every adversary that has risen against me. Let Your power be made perfect in my weakness, and may my life be a testimony of what You alone can do. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
