The Garment of Humility: Gospel Today Devotional - 12th October, 2022

The scripture not once, and not twice talks about humility. Its emphasis is on the fact that we need not think of ourselves more highly than we ought to think, and that we should even consider others better than we are. This doesn't mean that we are less deserving or less important but it is the way the kingdom of God operates.

The Garment of Humility: Gospel Today Devotional - 12th October, 2022

In the gospels, it was recorded that anyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be exalted. This is just the way it is in the kingdom. In this system of government, God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). It is also important to note that the proud in heart is an abomination to God (Proverbs 16:5). All these point our attention to the fact that humility is the language we speak in God's kingdom, and not pride.

Today, we shall be considering some verses in the scripture that will help shed more light on that which we have been talking about in the paragraphs above, and that is seen below,

"When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him; [9] And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room. [10] But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee. [11] For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." (Luke 14:8-11).

You see, the Lord Jesus had seen something, and he needed to address the issue; the very fact that some people were choosing the best for themselves. He then put forth a parable to address this situation: the issue of humility. Imagine you attended a party, and the organizers were to have certain guests of honor.

To make everything worse, they refused to send personal invitations to people and decided that they were just going to do it on that day. You being one of the influential persons in town decided to attend as well, and without anyone telling you to sit where they had kept for the special guests, you just went there directly because you felt you were special. How would you feel if others who were more important than you came, and you were asked to leave the place for them to sit? You would be very embarrassed, right?

But it would have been different if you had sat where others were sitting, and then asked to sit where the special guests were told to sit. This was the same thing our lord Jesus had to make known to them. Pride brings about embarrassment, but humility brings about honor.

As believers, it is important that in our dealings with men, we are to put on the cloth of humility (1 Peter 5:5), and in our dealings with God, we are to humble ourselves under his hands that he may exalt us in due time (1 Peter 5:6). Do you why? Because in this system of government, whoever humbles himself(brings himself down) shall be exalted ( will be taken up or honored), and whoever exalts himself(takes himself up) will be abased (disgraced, dishonored). The Lord help us all in Jesus' name. Amen.

Daily Nugget: As believers, we are to put on the garment of humility cause God resists the proud but gives grace and exalts the humble.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you help me not to allow pride into my life. That I may put on the garment of humility, humbling myself before you only to be exalted by you in Jesus' name. Amen.
