Still, Grace Found Me
By Hadassah Joseph
Called to the glory of my messiah,
My heavenly father; my maker,
The one who clothed me; my helper,
Moulded me for his desire,
Fights for me with his fire,
An ordinary human; a pariah.
The story of my creation,
Draws attention to my connection,
To the God who breathed his intention,
Into my lungs, for my retention,
I, his design, was the reflection,
Of the purpose of his invention.
But we disobeyed, from creation.
When Eve took the first bite of temptation,
Displeased my God raged with decision,
Out! of the garden in confusion,
To toil and sweat this thick earth in destitution,
God watched as man work hard in resolution,
And like a plague, wickedness crawled back with intention.
So when Cain killed Abel, he took action,
He spoke his curses in absolution,
Sin deepened, as men walked in deception
Once again; we were humans; a pariah.
Our merciful God didn’t mind our imperfection,
As he stepped off his throne, to a kingdom,
Filled with sinners, who cried for his intervention,
With pity, he sent Moses; a remediation,
From the hands of Pharaoh, the conundrum,
Yet lazy from waiting, we bowed to worship idols in delirium,
Oh! My God raged in irritation,
We had forgotten our past, our freedom,
Weak humans; a pariah.
From generation to generation,
We evolved in the nature of our pollution,
Falling in and out of sinful constitution.
Mercy searched for just one, desiring his salvation,
In Sodom, he found none, so they burned,
Only one could escape and Lot was his name,
After his fire came his flood,
Because our sins grew too big, for this God,
Appeased by Noah, he swore,
Never again, God promised, with a display galore.
I once asked myself, if I deserved it?
Tried to understand what I did to earn it.
By nature, I was swayed by my habits,
Convinced I was unfit, I accepted it.
Yet, he didn’t give up, he waited for me,
Gave me a choice to be with him,
I was lost, and ashamed,
In his compassion he found me,
And now; I’m content in him.
His grace surrounds me, it uplifts me,
It fills me, with the assurance he’s with me.
Even in my struggles, he’s near,
Chasing away all my fears,
Once a pariah, now grace has saved me.
It found me in my weakness,
Remade me in his goodness,
Enveloped me in his loving kindness,
Now my heart rejoices with gladness.
In darkest nights, I will witness,
I’ll tell of your love that’s ever so restless,
With sweet sounds, it’s saving power endless,
The devil may try to remove me from your presence,
Yet my soul holds firm to your faithfulness.
Too many testimonies that speak of its existence,
Mention Jesus, the man with essence,
Who bore the cross, endured the sentence,
Paid the price to break sin’s fence.
An only son, whose blood was shed for my fullness,
He became the door to God’s access.
There’s Abraham who waited, as years turned old,
Yet grace fufilled what prophesies foretold,
A son born to shame man’s reason,
A child of promise in due season.
Remember Saul the persecutor, ruthless and bold,
Hunting Christians, he was lost and cold,
Grace found him, and turned his night to light,
A voice of truth, that shone so bright.
Now look at me, an evidence of grace,
I dine with Christ, my resting place.
Safe in his hands, his angels stand,
About me, as I journey through life’s demands,
I meditate on his word, my truth, my stance,
With it I build my resistance,
Knowing that one day, I’ll be with him, as promised,
No longer lost, I’m saved,
Once a pariah, now wrapped in his grace.
