No Turning Back: The Story Behind the Song That Still Calls Us to Surrender

“I have decided to follow Jesus; no turning back, no turning back.”

These simple yet powerful words have stirred hearts across generations and continents from the hills of Assam in India to the streets of Lagos, Ibadan, and Abuja. If you’ve heard Gaise Baba and Lawrence Oyor’s latest version of “No Turning Back”, you know how deeply this song still resonates with the call to radical faith.

But did you know the hymn has its roots in a true story of martyrdom?

Over 150 years ago, during a mighty revival in Wales, the fire of the Gospel spread to distant lands. Some of that fire found its way to north-east India, where American Baptist missionaries began sharing the message of Jesus Christ among the fierce Garo tribes of Assam — known then as head-hunters.

One missionary, by God’s grace, led a man, his wife, and two children to Christ. Their transformation was evident, and many others in the village began to believe. This made the village chief furious. He summoned the Christian family and demanded that they publicly renounce their faith — or die.

With the Holy Spirit strengthening him, the man calmly declared:

“I have decided to follow Jesus.”

In a rage, the chief ordered the execution of his two children. Then he asked again, “Will you deny your faith now?”

The man responded:

“Though no one joins me, still I will follow.”

The chief, burning with anger, ordered his wife to be killed. Still, the man stood firm. One last time, the chief warned him to recant, but he boldly said:

“The cross before me, the world behind me. No turning back.”

He was executed but his testimony did not die.

Struck by the man’s unwavering faith, the village chief asked, “Why would a man, his wife, and children die for someone who lived over 2,000 years ago in a faraway land?” Convicted, the chief surrendered his life to Christ. That day, the entire village gave their hearts to Jesus.

The man’s name was Nokseng, and he was a Garo tribesman. His final words became a song, which was first sung by the Garo people and later carried across the world.

The melody is native to India, and the hymn was shaped into what we know today by Indian missionary Sadhu Sundar Singh. Another tradition credits Simon Marak of Assam for the hymn’s development. The arrangement which many churches now sing was edited by William Jensen Reynolds and included in the 1959 Assembly Songbook.

The song’s message of radical, total surrender continues to echo. And in our time, Nigerian Gospel voices like Gaise Baba and Pastor Lawrence Oyor have breathed new life into the hymn. Their powerful remix is more than music it’s a charge. A call to believers, especially in our generation, to choose Jesus again and again, no matter the cost.

In a world full of compromise and distractions, “No Turning Back” isn’t just a lyric — it’s a declaration. Whether you’re facing persecution or peer pressure, rejection or ridicule, the call is the same:

“I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back.”

May we, like Nokseng, stand faithful to the end and may our lives, like his, become a witness that draws others into the Kingdom.

It was the American Baptist Missionaries. The song is based on the last words of Nokseng, a man from Garo tribe of Assam (now Meghalaya and some in Assam), India. It is today the song of the Garo people. “I Have Decided to Follow Jesus” is a Garo song. [Blog updated
