How Nigerians Find Joy in the Midst of Chaos

In a nation where inflation, insecurity, and fuel scarcity have become a daily reality, many Nigerians are choosing joy, not as a denial of hardship, but as a deliberate spiritual response. We spoke with five believers who shared how they continue to find joy amid Nigeria’s growing uncertainty.

Iyanuoluwa

For Iyanuoluwa, epileptic power supply, emotional stress, and academic pressure have weighed heavily. “Building self-worth in this environment can feel like climbing uphill,” she shares. Her secret? Staying devoted to God in prayer and Bible study, while embracing purposeful relationships and creative expression. “I dance, I write stories, those moments keep my heart steady.” Her fellowship reminds her constantly that, “Jesus didn’t die for this less but for something more.” This perspective keeps her rooted.

Iyanu insists on her principles, keeps growing forward, and filters out public opinion to stay mentally sound. “Find your place in God, in His Word, and in the Body of Christ, your spiritual family. Stay there.”

“The Conqueror’s Chant” by Judikay and Isaiah 43 have been anchors for her soul. Following Apostle Femi Lazarus has also shaped her perspective deeply.

Malcolm Oserada

Malcolm describes the fear of the future, financial strain, and emotional pressure. “Hoping in myself or circumstances always led to hopelessness,” he admits. He found peace by placing his full trust in Christ. “It’s the only reasonable response in a time like this,” he says. His church community keeps him focused on the bigger picture: “The tribulations were foretold. My mission remains the same, the Great Commission.”

Daily prayer, studying the Word, fellowshipping, skill-building, and giving have kept him mentally and spiritually healthy. “Focus on Jesus. Even if you live 100 years, eternity still lies ahead. Ask God what He’d have you do, and pursue His assignment.”

The entire Bible and teachings on Kingdom Business, prayer, and service have kept him grounded.

Damilola

For Damilola, insecurity has been the loudest challenge but not louder than God’s presence. She finds peace in the reminder that “God is with me in the storm, and He’s coming back for us.” Friends and family often echo that truth back to her in hard times. “Serving God with the brethren helps me fulfill purpose,” she says.

Daily Bible study keeps her perspective sharp. “Look beyond now. See the brighter future God is preparing.” Teachings by Apostle Femi Lazarus have deeply encouraged her in this season.

Regina Monday

Budgeting under inflation has become “an extreme sport,” Regina jokes. Just commuting feels like “taking a trip to the Bahamas.” For Regina, Her family and Christian community have been her lifeline, through gists, WhatsApp broadcasts, and even free party jollof.

Knowing she’s being prayed for and loved has reassured her in countless unseen ways.

To keep her mind in check, she practices daily affirmation rooted in scripture and avoids toxic environments. “A messed-up head can kill faster than an economic crunch,” she warns.

Guard your heart and mind. Be deliberate about the voices you allow around you.

Romans 16:17 and 2 Corinthians 10:5 are her call to spiritual vigilance.

Oluwakemi

“I’ve had to work multiple jobs just to survive,” says Oluwakemi. Her community, church, friends, and family, and the vision God gave her continue to fuel her perseverance. Fellowship with believers constantly reminds her she’s not alone.

She practices daily biblical affirmations and immerses herself in testimonies. “What God has done for one, He can do again,” she says.

Remember God’s promises. They are still intact. Verses like Revelation 19:10, Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 84:11, and Isaiah 59:1 are her reminders that God’s hand is not too short to save.

Final Thoughts

Joy in Nigeria today may seem like a miracle. But for these five Christians, joy isn’t found in smooth roads, it’s discovered through spiritual grounding, community support, and a daily return to the truth of God’s promises. In chaos, they’ve found clarity.

 In darkness, they shine.ss
