Last night, I was awake all through and decided to pray. But after praying, I still couldn’t sleep. Then I realised something—I was already trying to figure out how my prayers would be answered.
I caught myself analysing the possible ways God might show up, almost as though I was trying to proffer solutions to the very things I had placed before Him. It dawned on me that what I thought was faith had quietly turned into worry.
The truth is, my fear and worries weren’t helping me; they only fuelled anxiety about what I had already prayed for.
Many times, we come into God’s presence with confidence, only to be paralysed later by fear—especially when what we’ve asked for seems too big for God to handle. You may never voice it out, yet, unconsciously, your heart begins to doubt. It often takes a moment of pause to see what’s really pushing you into that anxious state.
You might say, “But what if I was simply expectant?” And yes, it is good to be expectant. However, there’s a thin line between expectation and anxiety. Expectation strengthens faith, but anxiety feeds fear. When doubt begins to cloud your mind, your expectations shift into worry. And soon, the voice of fear makes you question God’s ability.
But Scripture reminds us:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
Your role is to pray and present your requests before Him. The how and when are not yours to decide—they belong to God. He is the giver of all good gifts. He knows exactly what you need, and His plan is always better than the one you could ever imagine.
Sometimes, the way you expect God to show up is far less than what He has in store for you. His plan isn’t just different—it’s greater.
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t set goals. In fact, the Bible encourages it:
“Commit your works to the Lord [submit and trust them to Him], and your plans will succeed [if you respond to His will and guidance].” – Proverbs 16:3 (AMP)
Notice that clause: your plans will succeed if they align with His will and guidance.
So, remember this—whatever you have, whatever you receive, even things you never asked for, are all because God gave them to you.
Let prayer lead you into peace, not worry. Trust that the One who hears your prayers is also able to exceed your expectations.
