2027 Elections: Let Nigerians Vote According to Their Conscience, Anglican Church Urges Politicians

With preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gradually gathering momentum, the Akoko-Edo Diocese of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has called on political leaders to uphold democratic values by allowing citizens to vote freely according to their convictions, without intimidation or inducement.

The appeal was made by the Bishop of the Diocese and President of Synod, Rt. Rev. Ebenezer Saiki, during his Bishop’s Charge at the Second Session of the Sixth Synod of the Diocese, held at St. Peter’s Church, Ikakumo, Edo State.  

Addressing the growing political conversations ahead of the elections, Bishop Saiki urged politicians, political parties, and candidates to conduct their campaigns with integrity, fairness, and respect for democratic principles.

“Nigeria will make greater progress when citizens vote according to conviction rather than inducement. The political class should allow the citizens to vote according to their conscience,” the bishop said.  

Beyond electoral matters, the Anglican bishop also expressed concern over the persistent insecurity affecting parts of Edo State, particularly the rise in kidnapping and violent attacks. He called on communities to remain vigilant and to work closely with security agencies in lawful efforts to protect lives and property.  

Bishop Saiki further commended the Edo State Government for ongoing rehabilitation work on the Auchi–Igarra–Ibillo Road, while encouraging the administration to extend development projects to other communities within the state.  

As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, the Church’s message serves as a reminder that democracy thrives when citizens are free to make informed choices without coercion, vote-buying, or undue influence. The Anglican Diocese also reaffirmed the importance of responsible civic participation, peaceful elections, and leadership rooted in justice and accountability.  

For Christians, the call echoes biblical principles of truth, integrity, and justice, encouraging believers to prayerfully engage in the democratic process while seeking the peace and progress of the nation.
