Anambra Government Seals Churches, Hostels, Market Over Sanitation Breaches

The Anambra State Government has sealed several churches, student hostels, business premises and a market in Awka South Local Government Area for violating the state’s environmental sanitation regulations during a statewide enforcement exercise. 

The action followed the state’s declaration of a public emergency on environmental sanitation amid growing concerns over environmental degradation caused by blocked drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal and the dumping of refuse into waterways. As part of the initiative, the government observed Saturday, July 4, 2026, as Environmental Sanitation Day, restricting movement across the state between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. except for essential services.

Officials of the “Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra” task force sealed several facilities, including Love Ambassadors Ministry and Dominion City, alongside a number of student lodges, commercial shops and Eke Nibo Market, after inspections reportedly revealed multiple sanitation violations.

According to the Commander of the enforcement team in Awka South, Prince Ikechukwu Ndigwe, some of the affected premises were found to have discharged wastewater and sewage into public drainage channels, posing health risks to nearby residents.

He explained that the exercise forms part of Governor Charles Soludo’s “Operation Keep Anambra Clean” initiative, aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness, public health and community safety across the state.

During the inspection, officials also ordered a structural integrity assessment of a building at Emmanuel Lodge in Ifite after visible cracks were discovered, raising concerns about the safety of occupants.

While the inclusion of churches among the affected facilities has generated public discussion, the enforcement exercise underscores that environmental sanitation laws apply to all institutions, including places of worship.

For churches, the development serves as a reminder that caring for the environment is consistent with biblical stewardship. Scripture teaches believers to be faithful caretakers of God’s creation and to promote healthy, orderly communities (Genesis 2:15; 1 Corinthians 14:40).

The Anambra State Government urged institutions, businesses and residents to comply with environmental regulations to safeguard public health and maintain cleaner communities.
