Nollywood actress and media personality Nancy Isime has generated widespread reactions after sharing her views on Christianity, saying she does not consider herself a “typical Nigerian Christian” and believes many people have accepted certain religious beliefs without questioning them.
Speaking during a recent interview, Isime said she prefers to develop her relationship with God through personal conviction rather than simply following religious traditions. She maintained that she does not rely solely on pastors or priests for spiritual direction, although she acknowledged learning from ministers such as Apostle Joshua Selman.
In the interview, the actress remarked that “Christianity is brainwashing,” explaining that her statement reflected her belief that many people embrace religious practices without personal understanding. She also referenced the life of Jesus Christ, noting that He was accused of witchcraft during His earthly ministry before later being recognised and worshipped by millions around the world.
Isime stressed that she is not interested in being what she described as a “typical Nigerian Christian,” adding that she prefers to think independently while pursuing her faith. According to her, every believer should seek a personal understanding of God rather than practising religion merely out of tradition or societal expectations.
Her comments have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some agreeing that faith should be rooted in personal conviction, while others criticised her characterisation of Christianity as “brainwashing,” arguing that the statement misrepresents the Christian faith.
