A Christian cleric has called on political parties preparing for future elections in Kaduna, Plateau, and other religiously diverse states to avoid presenting same-faith governorship tickets, warning that such arrangements could deepen divisions and undermine public trust.
The cleric argued that states with significant Christian and Muslim populations require leadership that reflects inclusiveness, fairness, and respect for the country’s religious diversity. He said balanced political representation remains essential for sustaining peace and strengthening democratic governance.
According to him, political parties should prioritise competence while also recognising the need for religious balance in states where faith identities have historically influenced political and social relations.
He warned that adopting same-faith tickets in sensitive states such as Kaduna and Plateau could heighten existing tensions, urging political leaders to make decisions that promote unity rather than deepen divisions.
The cleric also encouraged political stakeholders to place national and state interests above partisan calculations, stressing that leadership should inspire confidence among all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation.
He appealed to political parties to engage widely with religious leaders, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders before making decisions on governorship tickets, noting that inclusive governance remains one of the strongest foundations for lasting peace.
His comments come as conversations surrounding political inclusion and religious representation continue ahead of preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with the issue of same-faith tickets remaining a subject of public debate.
