Lagos Anglican Bishop Calls for Accountability, Integrity in Public Leadership

The Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos South-West, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Dr. Ebenezer Adewole, has challenged Nigerian leaders to embrace accountability and integrity, stressing that genuine national development can only be achieved through selfless service and responsible governance.  

Speaking ahead of the inaugural synod of the Diocese at the Cathedral Church of Pentecost, Festac Town, Lagos, the bishop said public office holders should regard themselves as trustees of the people’s resources rather than custodians of personal wealth.

According to him, leadership is a sacred responsibility that demands honesty, transparency, and commitment to the common good. He urged those in positions of authority to prioritise the welfare of citizens over personal interests, noting that Nigeria’s challenges require a change in attitude as much as policy reforms.  

Bishop Adewole also dismissed claims that the Church has remained silent on the nation’s problems, insisting that Christian leaders have consistently spoken prophetically on issues affecting the country.

He argued that the greater challenge is not the absence of the Church’s voice but the unwillingness of many people to listen amid the growing noise of competing opinions and narratives.  

While acknowledging that the Church cannot assume the constitutional role of government, the bishop said it has a responsibility to nurture people of integrity, pray for national leaders, and encourage competent, godly individuals to participate in governance.

He further maintained that elected officials should be evaluated based on measurable performance, accountability, and their impact on the lives of the people they serve.  

The bishop’s remarks come as Nigerians continue to call for greater transparency, responsible leadership, and improved governance in addressing the country’s economic and social challenges.
