Northern Christian Association Seeks Explanation Over ₦8.05bn Religious Budget Allocation

The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has called on the Federal Government to clarify what it described as a significant disparity in the allocation of funds for church and mosque projects in the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, the association expressed concern over reports indicating that approximately ₦1.91 billion was allocated to seven church-related projects, while about ₦6.14 billion was earmarked for 52 mosque-related projects, bringing the total allocation for religious projects to about ₦8.05 billion.

The NCA stated that while it is not opposed to government support for faith-based initiatives, public spending on religious projects should reflect the constitutional principles of fairness, equity, transparency and equal treatment of all citizens.

According to the association, the perceived imbalance has heightened concerns among many Christians regarding what it described as a recurring pattern of unequal treatment in public policy and government decisions.

Rev. Hayab warned that actions perceived as discriminatory could undermine national unity and public trust, adding that fairness in governance remains essential for peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.

He noted that Christians have consistently exercised restraint in the interest of national peace, but cautioned that such patience should not be mistaken for acceptance of policies viewed as inequitable.

The association clarified that its position should not be interpreted as opposition to Islam or to government collaboration with religious organisations. Rather, it urged authorities to ensure that any public funding for religious projects is distributed transparently and without creating the impression that one faith receives preferential treatment over another.

The NCA also called on the Federal Government to review the allocations in line with constitutional principles of justice and equality, arguing that budgetary decisions should strengthen national unity and reinforce public confidence in the impartiality of government.
