Uganda Adventist Church Opposes Mandatory National Cleaning Days Over Sabbath Observance

The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church in Uganda has raised concerns over the government’s newly introduced mandatory National Cleaning Days, arguing that the monthly exercise clashes with the church’s observance of the biblical Sabbath.

In a statement issued on Friday, July 24, the President of the Uganda Union Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Pastor Kajoba Samuel, said the denomination fully supports initiatives that promote sanitation, environmental conservation and healthier communities. However, he stressed that the church remains committed to preserving the sanctity of the Sabbath, which Adventists observe from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.  

The Ugandan government recently announced that National Cleaning Days will be held on the last Saturday of every month, with the inaugural exercise scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026. The programme requires citizens to participate in community clean-up activities between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., as part of a nationwide effort to improve sanitation and environmental hygiene.  

According to the SDA Church, the scheduled timing directly overlaps with Sabbath worship and religious activities, making it difficult for members to comply without compromising their faith commitments.

Church leaders disclosed that they are engaging the government in dialogue to find a mutually acceptable solution. Among the proposals under consideration is allowing Seventh-day Adventists to participate in the clean-up exercise on Friday or Sunday instead of Saturday.  

Pastor Kajoba also urged church members to remain calm, prayerful and respectful as discussions continue, expressing hope that a resolution can be reached that upholds both public health objectives and the constitutional right to freedom of worship.  

The National Cleaning Days initiative, approved by the Ugandan Cabinet, is intended to encourage community participation in sanitation, reduce disease outbreaks and foster environmental responsibility across the country. Government agencies and local authorities have been tasked with coordinating the monthly exercise.
