US House Approves Amendment to Withhold Aid to Nigeria Over Christian Protection Concerns

The United States House of Representatives has approved an amendment that could see U.S. assistance to Nigeria withheld until the Nigerian government demonstrates measurable progress in protecting Christians and addressing religiously motivated violence, according to congressional documents and committee statements.  

The amendment forms part of the Fiscal Year 2027 National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Bill. Supporters say the measure is intended to increase pressure on the Nigerian government to tackle persistent attacks on Christian communities and other religious minorities.

The decision comes amid growing concern among some U.S. lawmakers over the security situation in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt and northern regions, where churches, clergy, and Christian communities have suffered repeated attacks from armed groups over the years.

According to a report released earlier this year by the U.S. House Appropriations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, lawmakers recommended that funding to the Nigerian government be conditioned on concrete action to stop violence against Christians and improve accountability for perpetrators. The report also called for stronger cooperation between the United States and Nigeria in combating terrorism and protecting vulnerable communities.

The congressional action aligns with broader legislative efforts in Washington, including the proposed Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, which seeks enhanced U.S. engagement on religious persecution, annual reporting requirements, and increased diplomatic pressure on Nigeria to safeguard freedom of religion. It is important to note that this bill remains introduced legislation and has not become law.  

The proposed restrictions have generated renewed international attention on the plight of Christians in Nigeria. Human rights advocates and Christian organisations have repeatedly called for stronger protection of vulnerable communities, while Nigerian authorities have maintained that the country’s security challenges affect citizens across religious and ethnic lines and continue to require comprehensive responses.

If ultimately enacted and implemented, the aid restrictions could have implications for U.S.–Nigeria relations, particularly in areas of security cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and development partnerships. However, the exact scope of any funding suspension would depend on the final legislation and its implementation by U.S. authorities.
