Dr. Olu Emmanuel, a veterinary surgeon and protocol worker at Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners’ Chapel), has shared how what he describes as a divine instruction led him to develop a solar-powered umbrella.
For Dr Olu Emmanuel, innovation was not simply about creating something new. It was, in his words, an assignment that began with an unusual instruction from God.
A veterinary surgeon by profession, Emmanuel said he developed a passion for renewable energy about a decade ago and subsequently received training and certification in solar technology.
He began selling solar-powered products, including solar lights, power banks and generators. However, his journey took a different turn when he became more committed to serving in the church and joined the protocol service unit of Living Faith Church.
It was through his service in the church that the idea for the solar-powered umbrella emerged.
According to Dr. Emmanuel, umbrellas were commonly used as part of the protocol team’s identity. One day, he said he received an instruction from God concerning the umbrella he was carrying.
“God told me that this umbrella you are holding, I want you to convert it to solar.”
Although he had never seen or heard of such an umbrella before, Emmanuel said he took the idea to his workshop and began experimenting.
That experiment eventually became a working solar-powered umbrella.
Emmanuel said he subsequently submitted the innovation through his lawyer to the relevant intellectual property authorities in Abuja and also presented it to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for assessment.
He said the product was submitted to SON in 2023 and that, in July 2026, he was contacted and informed that the umbrella had been certified.
For Emmanuel, the journey has been one of faith, patience and commitment.
“I’ve been believing God that it shall be certified, it shall be validated, because without validation, it cannot fly,” he said.
He also connected the achievement to his continued commitment to serving God through his church’s cell ministry.
While Dr. Emmanuel’s testimony describes the innovation as the first solar-powered umbrella in Nigeria and, by extension, Africa, independent public evidence confirming that distinction was not found as Solar-powered umbrella designs have existed internationally for years. Also, the specific claim that his product is the first SON-certified solar-powered umbrella in Nigeria is yet to be confirmed from SON by the New Man Media as at the time of publishing and this News will be updated as soon as it’s confirmed.
Regardless of the distinction, Dr. Emmanuel’s story offers a powerful reminder of what can happen when faith, service, skill and innovation come together. His story also challenges Christians to see their professions, skills and creative abilities as more than tools for personal advancement.
The veterinary surgeon who became passionate about renewable energy, the church worker who noticed an ordinary umbrella, and the innovator who decided to act on an unusual idea all point to a larger lesson: God can use what is already in our hands to create something that serves others. From the pulpit to the workshop, from ministry to the marketplace, believers can glorify God through excellence, creativity and solutions that make life better for others.
Dr. Emmanuel’s journey is therefore not only a story about a solar-powered umbrella. It is a testimony about obedience to divine instruction, perseverance in the face of delay, and using one’s God-given gifts for a greater purpose.
And perhaps, most importantly, it is a reminder that the advancement of God’s kingdom does not happen only through preaching behind a pulpit. Sometimes, it happens through the work of our hands.
