Bishop Kukah Says Education Is Nigeria’s Greatest Weapon Against Insecurity and Poverty

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has called on governments at all levels to make education a national priority, describing it as the most effective long-term solution to insecurity and poverty in Nigeria.

The respected cleric made the remarks during the launch of an education initiative by the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Nigeria, where he emphasised that building schools and equipping young people with knowledge would produce more lasting results than relying solely on security operations.

According to Bishop Kukah, many of the challenges confronting Nigeria today—including insecurity, unemployment and widespread poverty—are connected to decades of inadequate investment in education.

“Education remains the most effective weapon against insecurity and poverty,” the bishop said, urging both government and private stakeholders to commit more resources to improving access to quality learning.

The initiative launched by JRS Nigeria seeks to expand educational opportunities for children and young people affected by conflict and economic hardship, particularly in northern Nigeria. The programme is expected to provide access to learning, skills development and renewed hope for vulnerable communities.

Bishop Kukah’s message reflects a timeless biblical principle: societies flourish when people are equipped with wisdom and understanding.

Scripture repeatedly highlights the value of knowledge and instruction. Proverbs 4:7 declares, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom.” Likewise, Hosea 4:6 warns that people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, underscoring the consequences of neglecting education.
