Security agencies have arrested three suspected members of a kidnapping gang allegedly linked to the August 2 attack on St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Inoyi-Affa, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The arrests followed a joint operation involving the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Forest Guard and other security personnel.
According to the Enugu State Government, one suspected kidnapper was killed during a gun battle with security forces, while four AK-47 rifles and ammunition were recovered from the group.
The development was disclosed on Monday night when Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, visited the state DSS headquarters to inspect the arrested suspects.
Speaking on behalf of the governor, Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said two of the three persons abducted during the church attack—Seminarian Lawrence Igbo and Emmanuel Onwudi—had regained their freedom.
Onyia further stated that the two released victims had identified the arrested suspects as those allegedly involved in their abduction.
He said the security operation demonstrated the state government’s determination to confront criminal activities and bring perpetrators to justice.
The SSG also warned individuals who provide support or information to criminal groups that they could face prosecution, stressing that investigations into the wider criminal network are still ongoing.
He commended the DSS, Nigerian Army, Police, Enugu State Forest Guard and other security personnel involved in the operation.
The August 2 attack on St. Joseph’s Catholic Church had raised fresh concerns over the safety of worshippers and religious communities in parts of the state.
Authorities say efforts are continuing to track down other members of the alleged criminal network.
