The Global Methodist Church (GMC) Nigeria has rejected allegations circulating online about its leadership structure, episcopal elections and governance, describing the claims as false, misleading and defamatory.
The church made its position known in a statement issued on Friday in Jalingo, Taraba State, following a viral Facebook video containing allegations about the denomination’s internal affairs. (The Trumpet Newspaper Nigeria)
According to the GMC Nigeria Media Team, the individual behind the video is a member of the United Methodist Church Nigeria and is not a member of the Global Methodist Church.
The church said the claims therefore do not represent its official position or accurately reflect its constitutional processes.
GMC: Bishops Are Elected Through Constitutional Procedures
A major issue addressed by the church was the process through which its bishops are elected.
The GMC denied claims that episcopal positions are distributed according to regional quotas, predetermined arrangements or political influence.
It maintained that bishops are elected by delegates through established constitutional procedures, guided by Scripture, prayer and discernment under the leading of the Holy Spirit. (The Trumpet Newspaper Nigeria)
The church also rejected suggestions that certain candidates receive preferential treatment or that “godfatherism” plays a role in the emergence of its bishops.
Church Denies Leadership Conflict
The GMC Nigeria further dismissed claims of dissatisfaction within its Assembly of Bishops over Presiding Bishop John Pena.
It also denied reports suggesting a leadership conflict between Bishop John Pena and Emeritus Bishop John Wesley.
The church described such claims as inaccurate representations of its internal administration.
GMC Rejects Claims of Racial Discrimination
The denomination also pushed back against allegations that Africans, including Nigerians, are excluded from leadership positions within the global church because of racial discrimination.
According to the GMC, Africans hold significant leadership positions across the denomination and continue to contribute to its governance, administration, mission and global ministry.
The church said the allegations were therefore misleading and did not reflect the role Africans play within the denomination.
Warning Over Alleged Defamatory Statements
The Global Methodist Church Nigeria called on the individual behind the viral video to withdraw the allegations and issue a public apology.
It further warned that continued publication of what it considers false and defamatory claims about the church, its leaders or members could lead to institutional and legal action.
The church urged Christians and members of the public to rely on verified information rather than speculation when discussing its leadership and governance.
The GMC Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to the authority of Scripture, biblical holiness, faithful discipleship and the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The church said it would remain focused on its mission despite what it described as ongoing misinformation concerning its leadership and constitutional processes.
