The Diocese of Lagos Mainland, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has celebrated its 20th anniversary with the public presentation of a new book documenting its history and development.
The anniversary celebration, held on Friday, featured the unveiling of The Church Is Marching On, a publication chronicling the journey, structure and growth of the diocese.
The event was attended by prominent Anglican leaders, including the former Bishop of Lagos Mainland Diocese, Most Revd Dr Adebayo Dada Akinde, and Rt Revd Dr Ebenezer Adewole. The Diocese of Lagos West was represented by Dr Mrs Lydia Odedeji
Reviewing the book, veteran journalist and former Editorial Chairman of The Guardian, Dr Reuben Abati, described the publication as an important contribution to preserving the history of the Anglican Church.
Abati particularly highlighted Chapter 13, which examines the future of the diocese and the wider church, noting that the contributors raised important questions about the direction of Christianity and its role in society.
He said the publication marked an important step towards systematic documentation of the history of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland and the wider Anglican Communion.
Abati also encouraged the diocese to continue documenting its journey and publish subsequent editions as it reaches future milestones.
According to him, the book goes beyond recording the past, as it also opens discussions on the place of Christianity in Nigerian society and some of the challenges facing the Church.
The former bishop, Akinde, also announced that the Synod of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland would hold on August 20 as part of activities marking the anniversary.
The Diocese of Lagos Mainland was formally established following a special Synod held at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, on February 2, 2006. St Jude’s Church, Ebute Metta, was subsequently designated as its cathedral.
The 20th anniversary celebration therefore provides an opportunity for the diocese to reflect on its two-decade journey while looking ahead to its future ministry and contribution to the Christian faith in Nigeria.
The anniversary book, The Church Is Marching On, is expected to serve as a historical record of the diocese’s growth and development for present and future generations.
