The Revived Altar by Elizabeth Feranmi Ayoola

The Revived Altar by Elizabeth Feranmi Ayoola

Like every other convert, I had my altar of worldliness pulled down at salvation.
Salvation instilled in me a zeal which became a force,
driving me to willingly to go any length to keep the fire on the new altar erected burning.
In no time, I became a slave to fast, as I gave myself to the ministry of the word and prayer.
Gathering of believers?
I never joked with it, just so I could keep the fire burning.
Before, I knew it, the altar was blazing with fire_ real fire.
Finally, I got what I so much desire.
I kept my arms crossed all because I thought that was all.
Unknown to me
That guilt, and shame that I hid beneath my garment
Had gradually put out the fire.
When I finally became aware, the fire was out, completely.

Then, I recalled moments
When I struggled to do the spiritual exercises I once do with ease.
Likewise, the call I have been ignoring all these while_
call for submission to the Holy Spirit was brought to my remembrance.

That instance
It dawned on me that sustenance on the altar
can only be possible in submission to the Spirit.
Truly, by strength shall no man prevail.

Without hesitation
I answered the call.
It was not an easy thing to do
nevertheless, it is inevitable.
I was exposed to the purifying fire
Where I began to die to self.
I saw the garment of guilt, and shame being burnt.
While I was clothed with holiness.
The more I was exposed; the better I become.

In a twinkle of an eye, I saw fire again on my altar.
This time, I was not excited
I had learnt my lessons.
Instead, I tarried in His presence.
As I continued in His presence
It began to burn.
Until it was twice as fierce
Just as it was in the beginning.
At last, the altar was revived.
