Everything is Vanity

Everything is Vanity by Lois Nguveren Ugbu

I began to wonder if King Solomon actually knew what he was saying when he said everything done under the sun was vanity.

I would even like to say it the way he said it "I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit." I refuse to be disrespectful but did this man understand what it meant to see all the works under the sun? Was he present at each time everything happened? What could vexation of spirit even mean? How can the spirit be vexed?

I respect king Solomon in his clothing, apparel, wealth and wisdom but did he see the way the rich man that lived opposite me drove cars that flashed to blur our vision when he rode past? Did he see the way these girls flaunted their rich men in the name of "chopping life"? Was he present at the wedding I attended last week were the floor I stepped on was notes of cash stacked together? Can he taste and savour the food and meat I ate at the popular restaurant in town "Satisfactions?" I know he was rich but I can't remember him being at any of these events that I went to. Did he ever have a convoy of the latest Lexus cars? Or was it the horses he rode on that ached his legs before his destination that made him think to conclude life was vanity?

I really wanted to meet this all-knowing king and challenge his conclusions.

But as I sat with thoughts buzzing within me, I started to recall. Wasn't it last week that the rich man complained bitterly to my father of sleepless nights? Why could this money buy him cars able to blur our vision just when he passed but couldn't buy him sleep? Why were these big girls that I thought had it all together crunched up every now and then crying? Why did I hear the marriage I attended last week was over already in less than a month? Why did the rice I ate at "Satisfactions" wasn't able to satisfy me even in a day? Why were convoys not able to protect anybody?

I actually thought King Solomon looked only under the son and I tried to look in the sun, under the sun and through the sun and hastily, I concluded that he was wrong. But I know, a man that can never lie once said to me from the Book that "godliness with contentment is great gain." I realized that everything under the sun was true vanity and vexation of spirit. A life without Jesus was vain. A life without Jesus was a total mess and vanity. Truly everything under the sun is vanity and vexation of spirit.
