The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared three days - Thursday, December 25th, Friday, December 26th, 2025 as well as Thursday, January 1st, 2026 as public holidays for the Christmas and New Year celebrations respectively.
This was recorded in a statement signed on Monday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The public holidays, the statement added, are to celebrate Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year in that order.
According to the statement, the minister encouraged Nigerians to reflect on the principles of love, peace, humility and sacrifice symbolised by the birth of Jesus Christ.
Tunji-Ojo also appealed to citizens, regardless of religion or ethnic background, to use the festive period to offer prayers for peace, enhanced security and national development.
He urged Nigerians to be law-abiding and security-conscious throughout the celebrations, while extending his wishes for a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. He also urged Christians to emulate Jesus and reflect on his teachings as they celebrate. He also called on believers not to allow criminal-minded people to push them into creating anarchy in the country.
