June 11, 1850

A pioneer in Christian publishing, David C. Cook was born. He founded the David C. Cook Publishing Company, which became a leading publisher of Sunday School materials and Christian literature. 


June 11, 1970

Goodbye to Frank Laubach, Apostle of Literacy. Laubach had become aware of the importance of literacy while serving as a missionary among Maranao Moro Muslims in the Philippines. Poverty and injustice crushed their lives. He decided that much of it could be remedied if only the people could read. The "Apostle of Literacy" and his wife Effa are buried in Benton, Pennsylvania. Their tombstone reads "World Missionaries."


June 11, 1931

A Brazilian Catholic martyr, Blessed Albertina Berkenbrock was born in 1919 and was murdered on June 11, 1931. She was beatified by the Vatican in 2004.


June 11, 1869

Pope Pius IX opened the First Vatican Council, which defined papal infallibility and addressed the relationship between the Catholic Church and the modern world.


June 11, 2019

First Female Deacon Ordained in the Roman Catholic Church.  Pope Francis ordained the first female deacon in the Roman Catholic Church for the Institute of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Argentina.


June 11, 1977

On this day, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Homa Bay in Kenya was established.
