Scottish athlete Eric Liddell won the gold medal in the 400 meters at the Paris Olympics. A devout Christian, Liddell refused to run in his favored 100-meter race because the heats were held on a Sunday, in keeping with his religious convictions. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had initially planned a nationwide peaceful protest to address the ongoing herdsmen killings affecting Christian communities, particularly in Plateau and Benue states. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, CAN postponed the protest. Despite this, they proceeded with a three-day period of prayer and fasting from July 9 to 11, 2018, culminating in a gathering at the National Christian Centre in Abuja on July 11, where church leaders and members prayed for peace and an end to the violence.
