On this day, Carl Gutzlaff and Jacob Tomlin were the first Protestant missionaries to set foot in Siam, initiating early Protestant outreach in the region.

23rd August, 1838

On this day,  Mary Lyon’s Mt. Holyoke Seminary, later Mount Holyoke College,  celebrated its first graduating class, a milestone for Christian education for women.

23rd August, 1901

On this day, around 600 American Protestant teachers arrived to staff schools in Philippines, starting a wave of Protestant education in a predominantly Catholic nation.

23rd August, 1918 

On this day , Bishop Ephraim of Selenginsk, a Russian Orthodox leader and missionary to Mongols, Buryats, and Koreans was executed by the Soviets.

23rd August, 1928 

Death of Hymn‑writer Russell Kelso Carter: The Methodist preacher behind “Standing on the Promises” died in Catonsville, Maryland.

23rd August, 1980 

On this day, the Church of Pentecost (Ghana) officially launched PENSA (Pentecost Students and Associates) at a general conference in Prempeh College, Kumasi, attended by around 800 students. A constitution was ratified, and the movement was shortly recognized by the Church Council in 1981.
