The Diocese of Akure (Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion) has confirmed the appointment of the Very Rev. Prof. Ayo Atowoju as Provost of St. David’s Cathedral Church, Ijomu, Akure by the Most Revd. Dr Simeon Oluwole Borokini.
The decision, announced through church channels and later circulated on social media, has been acknowledged by clergy and laity within the Diocese.
Atowoju, who hails from Omuo Ekiti in Ekiti State, is a priest of the Diocese of Akure and has served in multiple capacities within the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
Prior to his appointment, he held a number of key positions within the church structure.
His emergence as Provost is considered an important step in the administration of the Cathedral, with expectations that his academic background and pastoral experience will support its spiritual and organisational responsibilities.
Sources within the Diocesan headquarters described him as a “theological giant,” citing his academic record as well as his measured and practical approach to ministry.
“Very Rev. Prof. Ayo Atowoju’s leadership is expected to usher in a new phase of spiritual revival and structural growth for both the Cathedral and the Diocese,” they renarked.
Atowoju is also related by marriage to Very Revd. Justus Olugasa of blessed memory, a link regarded as part of a broader tradition of service within the Anglican Communion.
As news of the appointment spread, congratulatory messages poured in from congregants, clergy and well-wishers, expressing confidence in his capacity to lead the Cathedral to greater heights.
The Diocese is expected to proceed with arrangements for his formal installation.
