The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to discourage residents from relying solely on prayers and spiritual interventions to treat medical conditions, urging them to seek appropriate healthcare when necessary.
The state Ministry of Health called for increased health education and public awareness to help residents make informed decisions about their health and avoid delays in seeking professional medical care.
The ministry said some residents still turn to prayer houses and other spiritual centres for conditions that require medical attention, a practice that could contribute to complications and preventable deaths.
Health authorities stressed that faith and prayer could coexist with medical treatment, but urged residents not to substitute spiritual practices for professional healthcare, particularly in emergencies and serious medical conditions.
The government’s position is part of broader efforts to improve health-seeking behaviour in the state and ensure that residents have access to timely and appropriate medical care.
Officials also emphasised the importance of educating communities about available healthcare services and encouraging people to consult qualified health professionals when they develop symptoms or require treatment.
The campaign seeks to promote a balanced approach in which religious faith does not prevent residents from accessing evidence-based medical care.
