The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has shared how lessons from his days as an amateur boxer—and his admiration for legendary heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali—have continued to influence his outlook on life and faith.
Speaking during a sermon titled “Divine Champion” at the RCCG Headquarters in Lagos ahead of the church’s 74th Annual Convention, Pastor Adeboye described Muhammad Ali as one of his heroes, saying the boxing icon’s strategy and resilience taught him valuable lessons about preparation, wisdom, and overcoming life’s battles.
Recalling Ali’s famous psychological tactics before major fights, the cleric explained that the former world heavyweight champion often unsettled his opponents before stepping into the ring, leaving them vulnerable to costly mistakes.
Drawing a spiritual lesson from the experience, Adeboye said believers should recognise that life’s battles require more than human strength. He stressed that just as a boxer benefits from a skilled coach, Christians need God’s guidance to navigate challenges they cannot foresee.
The respected preacher also reflected on his own boxing experience, noting that his coach instilled principles of discipline, strategy, and perseverance that have remained relevant throughout his ministry and personal life. He encouraged Christians to rely on God’s wisdom rather than their own understanding when facing difficult situations.
Pastor Adeboye’s remarks come as preparations continue for RCCG’s annual convention, where he expressed confidence that this year’s gathering would be a remarkable time of spiritual renewal and divine encounters for participants.
