Lawyers have called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to secure the release of a 17-year-old Christian girl who was allegedly forcibly converted to Islam in Bauchi State.
The legal practitioners are demanding urgent intervention in the case, amid concerns over the girl’s safety, religious freedom and fundamental rights.
According to reports, the teenager was allegedly subjected to pressure to abandon her Christian faith and embrace Islam. The circumstances surrounding her alleged conversion have raised concerns among lawyers and Christian advocates, who are calling for appropriate authorities to investigate the matter and ensure that the girl’s rights are protected.
The case comes amid wider concerns over allegations of forced conversion and the vulnerability of Christian girls and women in parts of northern Nigeria. Previous reports have documented allegations involving underage girls being forced into religious conversion and marriage.

The lawyers are therefore urging the DSS to act swiftly, secure the teenager’s freedom and ensure that any investigation into the circumstances of her alleged conversion is conducted in accordance with Nigerian law and the protection of her fundamental rights.
They also called for accountability where wrongdoing is established, particularly if the girl was coerced, unlawfully detained or subjected to other forms of abuse.
The development has renewed calls for stronger protection of minors and greater respect for freedom of religion and belief, particularly in cases involving vulnerable children.
