There are leaders who are defined by what they achieve, and there are leaders who are defined by who they are. Reverend Felix Meduoye, a chartered accountant turned pastor, corporate executive director turned General Overseer, and servant of God who answered a call that most people around him could not hear, is unmistakably the second kind. His nearly five decades of ministry in The Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, culminating in nine years as the church’s fourth indigenous General Overseer, have produced a legacy not merely of institutional growth but of character - what those who know him best consistently describe as grace.

Birth and Background
Reverend Felix Meduoye was born on 16th June, 1949. He grew up in a home that was not initially grounded in orthodox Christianity - his father used to be a Jehovah’s Witness, and it is usually difficult for Jehovah’s Witnesses to be made to see any other side of the Christian faith. That background made his eventual conversion and deep commitment to evangelical Christianity all the more significant, and it gave him an early, formative understanding of the way faith can divide a family - and the way grace can heal it.
Conversion: A Service That Changed Everything
Rev. Felix Meduoye gave his life to Christ in 1972 in a worship service at the Foursquare Gospel Church, Agege, Lagos. He was not chasing ministry. He did not intend to be a pastor - he just loved serving the Lord. From the moment of his conversion, however, he immersed himself in the life of the church in ways that would shape him long before he ever stood in a pulpit.
From his higher institution days, he was deeply involved in Christian activities, serving as a students’ Christian leader long before he was formally ordained into pastoral ministry.
A Distinguished Career in the Marketplace
Before answering the call to full-time ministry, Rev. Meduoye built a career that most people would have been reluctant to leave. He rose through the ranks at the West African Milk Company Nigeria Limited, which is now known as Friesland Foods/WAMCO, becoming Executive Director, Finance and Administration. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.
By the grace of God, he rose to the position of one of the executive directors two years before he eventually left his secular job. Those were not years of coasting - they were years of excellence. Rev. Meduoye was not a man who drifted out of the corporate world because he had nothing left to achieve. He left at the height of his professional life, and he left because he had no other choice.
The Call to Ministry
The call to leave WAMCO and enter full-time ministry did not arrive as a comfortable impression. It came with the urgency of a command.
The calling was very prompting. He remembers a time he was about to take off his jacket and heard the voice of the Lord saying: “Unless you resign, you will never have the needed peace you want to have.” A few months later he dropped his letter of resignation and crossed to full-time ministry in 1991.
Yet the decision was not simple. When he got the prompting to go into full-time ministry, he was married with five children, all of them in primary school at the time. He began to calculate - which was why it took two years to make up his mind. It was really difficult to explain this urge to anybody, because it was the Lord’s calling. Not everyone would understand.
The story he has shared publicly captures the moment God pressed the issue directly: his children used to attend a private primary school that was fairly expensive, because he and his wife wanted to give them the best. When the firstborn finished primary school, he moved him to a public school near where they lived and one day, sitting in his car coming from the office, the Lord asked him why he had put the boy there. He was asking whether it was because he thought, if he left the job, there would not be enough money to pay the children’s school fees. His wife and he discussed it and moved the children back to private schools. By way of testimony: he had left secular work, all their children went through private schools, and how it happened, he cannot explain.
Although he was retained on the board for another six months after his resignation, he thereafter completely left the secular world - no commercial or secular activity by the grace of God. He gave himself completely, and God has been providing.
Theological Training
Alongside his professional qualifications, Rev. Meduoye pursued formal theological education. He obtained a Bachelor of Theology at LIFE Theological Seminary, Ikorodu, Nigeria, and a Master of Arts in Theological Studies at Evangel Theological Seminary, Jos, Nigeria. He also holds a second Bachelor of Arts from LIFE Theological Seminary, Lagos, reflecting his commitment to staying academically grounded in the Word he was called to preach.
Rise Through Foursquare Leadership
In March 1987, Rev. Felix Meduoye and his wife, Pastor (Mrs.) Olubisi Meduoye, were appointed pioneer pastors of a branch of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Lagos. Under God’s grace and leading, they steadily progressed to become Zonal Superintendent and District Overseer, serving over the Ikeja, Festac, and Akowonjo Districts successively over a period of twenty-three years.
Across that journey, he also served at various times as Sunday School Teacher, Council Member, Council Secretary, Missions and Evangelism Leader, and Christian Education Minister. Every rung was served faithfully, without shortcuts. Every office was an apprenticeship for the one above it.
General Overseer: The Fourth Indigenous Leader
In the year 2010, Rev. Felix Meduoye was elected and installed as the fourth indigenous General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria.
He walked into a storm. When he took over, the organisation was in a very difficult state. The former General Overseer had not formally handed over to anyone - he had not received the majority vote needed to continue, but the constitution had brought in an acting general overseer. That led to a lot of complications. But over time, God helped them to overcome. When he came in, it was a little bit stormy, but God made that something of the past.
Over nine years, Rev. Meduoye stabilised the church, expanded its reach, and led with the servant-leadership model he consistently espoused. He preached leadership in church. His view of a leader is someone who is walking in front while others are following, and he identified Jesus as the model for the church leader. A church leader, he taught, is a servant, and it is where the church leader finds it difficult to be a servant leader that problems set in.
He officially handed over leadership to Rev. Samuel Aboyeji, elected as the fifth General Overseer, on Sunday, July 21, 2019, after attaining the Foursquare Gospel Church’s statutory retirement age of 70.
“Leaving Is Not Retirement”
Rev. Meduoye was characteristically clear about what stepping down from the General Overseer’s office meant and what it did not mean. In God’s business, there is no retirement. He was only retiring from the office of the General Overseer. He had a strong witness that God was not finished with him yet. As he left office, he was giving himself some time to draw close to God until he is out of this earth.
That conviction proved not to be mere words. Following his transition from Foursquare leadership, he established Gracelife Ministries International, and currently serves as President, Gracelife Ministries International, as well as General Overseer Emeritus, Foursquare Gospel Church Nigeria. The ministry continues. The voice has not gone silent.
Rev. Meduoye’s life and ministry was celebrated with the publication of his biography, Felix Meduoye: The Footprints of an Apostle of Grace, unveiled at the Foursquare Gospel Church’s national headquarters in Yaba, Lagos. The event drew one of the most distinguished gatherings in Nigerian church history.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo served as keynote speaker, describing Rev. Meduoye as a preacher of repute who naturally attracts respect. Underlining the place of character, Osinbajo declared that there is no assignment higher than preaching, and that the gospel is best preached by way of character.
Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God said of him: “Gentle, wise and insightful, he has advanced the cause of the gospel in Foursquare and many other missions… his love for Christ remains untainted by great achievement and prosperity.”
Pastor Williams Folorunso Kumuyi of Deeper Christian Life Ministry commended Rev. Meduoye for his giant strides in expanding the work of the Foursquare Gospel Church and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ across Nigeria.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the special guest of honour, said Meduoye depicts grace, and charged Christians to live lives worthy of emulation. Dr. Glenn Burris Jr., President of the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in California, USA, described him as an exemplary leader: “I love this man — his integrity, spiritual discipline and visionary leadership… You are one of the finest men I know in leadership.”
Professor Bamitale Omole, Pro-Chancellor of Ekiti State University, who reviewed the book, described it as a manual containing lessons from the author’s life that others could learn. Also in attendance were former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, Rev. Dr. Wilson Badejo (former General Overseer), Rev. Tunde Lemo (former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria), and other leaders of the Nigerian church and state.
On the Church, Leadership, and Nigeria
Over the course of his ministry, Rev. Meduoye has spoken candidly on the state of the church and the responsibility of leaders, both spiritual and political. His reflections are those of a man who has observed both boardroom and pulpit from the inside.
On the church facing criticism: it is because of the depravity of humanity. If one out of four persons misbehaves, the good ones will not make the headlines. Evil moves faster than good, in the media and everywhere. But many Christians out there are serving God faithfully. With the enlargement of the church, standards began to fall - people in church for money, connections, and influence. But Jesus referred to it: in the last day, there will be a separation.
On Nigerian leadership: one of the major problems in Nigeria is leadership. A political leader should be someone with an interest in the common man - not only the presidency but every arm of government. One of the conquests Jesus made was self. He washed his disciples’ feet. We have the problem of self in this part of the world. And as followers, we also put too much pressure on those we elect, asking for what cannot be achieved in ten years in one day.
Marriage, Family, and the Woman Behind the Ministry
God gave him a wife. He told her she would have to drop everything for the work. When you have a wife who stands by you, you will be helped. He thanked her often for taking care of the children. She was always present with them when he was out there doing ministry, and she was doing the most. They travel together a lot, but she always talked to the children.
Rev. Felix Meduoye lives in Lagos with his wife, Pastor (Mrs.) Olubisi Meduoye, who is herself an ordained minister of the Foursquare Gospel Church. Their partnership spans more than four decades of shared sacrifice and shared ministry with five children raised on a pastor’s faith, all of them, by God’s grace, schooled privately, doing well, and living testimonies to the God their father staked everything on.
